Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Ancient Greek χιλίαρχος (khilíarkhos), from χίλιοι (khílioi, thousand) +‎ ἄρχω (árkhō, to rule), itself a calque of Old Iranian *hazāra-pati-.[1]
