Likely borrowed from Old East Slavic цѣлъ (cělŭ), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *cělъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *káilas, from Proto-Indo-European *kéh₂ilos (“healthy, whole”). Compare obsolete Lithuanian čielas, cielas.
