Hungarian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From a Slavic language; compare Slovene cigan (“Gypsy”), Serbo-Croatian Cȉgani pl (“Gypsies”). Ultimately from Byzantine Greek τσιγγάνος (tsingános, “Gypsy”), from a word meaning “untouchable”.[1][2][3] Compare German Zigeuner, and Romanian țigan, which are cognates.
