Old English[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps from an earlier *cerċan, a metathetic variant of *creċċan, *cræċċan, from Proto-West Germanic *krakkjan. If so, then cognate with Old High German krehhen (to shake, shatter, break).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈt͡ʃir.t͡ʃɑn/, [ˈt͡ʃirˠ.t͡ʃɑn]

Verb[edit]

ċirċan

  1. to make a roaring sound, as of waves crashing
    ċirċinde wæter
    roaring water
