Etymology[edit]

The cl- anlaut of clúdach derives from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to cover; hide; protect). The -d- could regularly derive from Celtic -nt, in which case the ending could contain Proto-Indo-European *(s)teg- (cover), though the Celtic suffix *-ākos is more likely.
