Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic кънѧзь (kŭnęzĭ, prince), from Proto-Slavic *kъnędzь (prince), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *kuningaz. The latter sense was influenced by Russian князь (knjazʹ) and Ukrainian князь (knjazʹ). Doublet of chinez.
