Inherited from Vulgar Latin or Late Latin coxa (“thigh”), from Latin coxa (“hip”), from Proto-Indo-European *koḱs-. Compare Aromanian coapsã, Dalmatian copsa, also Albanian kofshë. Doublet of coxă.
