Italian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Several theories exist. Possibly from a central-northern Italian word (cf. cocón) ultimately derived from Latin calcāre (to press),[1][2] or from a derivative of Latin caucus, from Ancient Greek káukē.[3] Alternatively, from a corchiume, related to Spanish corcho (cf. English cork), from Latin cortex.[4]

  • Rhymes: -ume
  • Hyphenation: coc‧chiù‧me
