Inherited from Old Spanish costumne, from Vulgar Latin *cōstūmen or *cōstūmine (compare Catalan costum, French coutume, Italian costume, Portuguese costume), contracted form of *cōsuētūmen, from Latin cōnsuētūdinem, from cōnsuēscō (to accustom, habituate), from con- (with) + suēscō (to become accustomed). Doublet of consuetud, a borrowing.
