Etymology 1[edit]

Unknown. Possibly of expressive origin (cf. cotrobăi). Unlikely to be from either Hungarian kötö (bundled strongly), Latin captorius, Latin *coactorium (place where two objects come together) or from Serbo-Croatian katarište (flag lance).
