15th century. From cruz (“cross”) + -eiro. Cognate with Portuguese cruzeiro and Spanish crucero.

cruceiro m (plural cruceiros)
- calvary; Galician high cross, frequently representing a scene of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and located either at the churchyard or at a crossroad
- (architecture) crossing (the volume formed by the intersection of chancel, nave and transepts in a cruciform church; often with a tower or cupola over it)
- Dende o cruceiro tíñase unha vista xeral da igrexa. ― There was a general view of the church from the crossing.
- cruise (a sea or lake voyage, especially one taken for pleasure)
- cruise ship, cruiser (a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and the ship's amenities are considered an essential part of the experience)
- cruiser (a class of fast warships of medium tonnage, having a long cruising range but less armour and firepower than a battleship)
