Etymology[edit]

Often considered to be from Greek κουκουβάγια (koukouvágia), but seems linked to a number of foreign cognates, including Albanian kukuvajkë, Italian coccoveggia, cuccumeggia, Calabrian cucumau, cuccuvella. Other theories include a Vulgar Latin *cucumella, or an expressive or onomatopoeic creation.
