Etymology[edit]
From daşaq: the gemination of the intervocalic /ş/ is probably due to emphasis. Similar process can be observed in aşağı, often pronounced /aşşağı/ in both Azerbaijani and other Turkic varieties.[1]
Two possibilities exist regarding the ultimate origin:
- A dimunitive of Proto-Turkic *tiāĺ (“stone”), i.e. 'little stone' or otherwise related to the sense 'stone'; see Azerbaijani daş.
- A derivation of Proto-Turkic *taĺ (“outer side, exterior”), i.e. 'that which hangs outside (of the body)'; see Azerbaijani dış (“exterior”), dışarı (“outside”), daşmaq (“to overflow, to boil over”) and daşımaq (“to carry”), compare also Turkish taşınmak (“to move”).
Cognate with Turkish taşak, Crimean Tatar taşaq, Karachay-Balkar ташакъ (taşaq), Kipchak طشاق.
