Etymology 2[edit]
From Middle Dutch dauese, probably from the adjectival sense (see Etymology 1). A direct descending from Proto-West Germanic *dawas, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰowos- (“botfly”), has also been proposed (Goossens 1985).
