From Proto-Turkic *tāpan (“foot, sole”). Cognate with Turkish taban (“sole of a foot”), Kazakh табан (taban, “foot, sole”), Bashkir табан (taban, “heel”), Kyrgyz таман (taman, “foot, sole”), Chuvash тупан (tup̬an), etc.
