Maltese[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From dak in-nhar (“that day”). The gemination caused by the definite article was reduced when h was still a consonant. Outside the lexicalised adverb it was later restored, such that both are now pronounced differently. Compare the same in nofsinhar.
