Etymology[edit]
From Old Irish deug. If related to Welsh diod (“drink”), from Proto-Celtic *dī-āti-s, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suck”). Possibly also cognate with Latvian dažyti (“to paint, dye”).[1][2]
