From Proto-Indo-European *dʰerg-. Cognate with Latvian der̂dzêtiês (to quarrel, fight), Old Prussian dergē (hate) 3pl., Middle High German terken, derken (to make dark, soil, defile).

dérgėti (third-person present tense dérgėja, third-person past tense dérgėjo)
