Probably from the feminine of Late Latin Tartarucchus or tartarūchus, a mythological spirit of Greek origin, from Ancient Greek ταρταροῦχος (tartaroûkhos), from Τάρταρος (Tártaros). Compare also Medieval Latin tortuca.
