Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Traditionally durchbleuen; altered like einbleueneinbläuen in folk-etymological reference to blau and here also the bluish color of bruises, compare blauer Fleck.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Verb[edit]

durchbläuen (weak, third-person singular present bläut durch, past tense bläute durch, past participle durchgebläut, auxiliary haben)

  1. (colloquial, transitive) to beat to a pulp; to beat up severely
    Synonym: durchprügeln

Usage notes[edit]

  • The spelling durchbläuen has been the prescribed spelling since the German spelling reform of 1996 (the Rechtschreibreform). In the affected areas, the previous spelling (durchbleuen) is now less common, and may be regarded as a misspelling.
