Etymology[edit]

From el + dialectal gün (foreign people), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ēl (realm, people) and *kün (foreign people). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (elgün), Karakhanid [script needed] (el kün), etc.[1]
