engine cleaner (plural engine cleaners)

  1. (rail transport, dated, British) An employee who cleans railway locomotives, especially steam locomotives in the days of steam.
    • 1943 September and October, “Top Link Drivers”, in Railway Magazine, page 293:
      Driver Langdale entered the service of the L.N.W.R. as an engine cleaner at Camden on April 25, 1898, at the age of 17, and has been stationed in the London area ever since.
