Etymology[edit]
Via other European languages (e.g., French épithète), ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek ἐπίθετον (epítheton, “adjective”), the neuter of ἐπίθετος (epíthetos, “attributed, added”), from ἐπιτιθέναι (epitithénai, “to add on”).
