Middle French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First known attestation 1573. Old French *estrave, a borrowing from Old Norse stafn. The technical nature of the word may explain why it is not attested earlier,[1] as Old Norse had split into its daughter languages by 1573.

Noun[edit]

estrave f (plural estraves)

  1. (nautical) stem

Descendants[edit]

  • French: étrave
