Etymology[edit]
From Latin faldistorium, faldestorium, from Old High German faldstuol, faldan, faltan (“to fold”) (German falten) + stuol (“stool”), so called because it could be folded or laid together. See fold, and stool, and compare faldstool, fauteuil.
