From Vulgar Latin *fangus, of Germanic origin, either from Proto-Germanic *fanją (swamp, fen) or Proto-Germanic *fangō (mud, swamp). Cognate with Old Occitan fanc, fang, Italian fango, Spanish fango. Compare also French fagne.
