From Ottoman Turkish فیات (fiyat), فیئات (fiyat, fiʼat, fyat, “price”). Pseudo-Arabism formed artificially in Ottoman with the Arabic plural ending ـَات (-āt) from Ottoman فی (“price”), which is itself from dialect Arabic فِي (fī, “there is (scilicet: it costs, it makes)”).
