Borrowed from Swedish fjortis (“immature teenager”), from fjorton (“fourteen”) (with the suffix -is, from Latin -is), from Old Swedish fiughertān, fiughurtan (“fourteen”), from Old Norse fjugurtán, fjugrtán, of fjórtán (“fourteen”), from Proto-Germanic *fedurtehun (“fourteen”), from both *fedwōr (“four”), from *petwṓr, from *kʷetwṓr of Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwóres (“four”) + and from *tehun (“ten”), from *tehunt, from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥t (“ten”). Equivalent to fjorten +‎ -is.
