Etymology[edit]

A calque of Ancient Greek σαρκοκόλλα (sarkokólla), from σάρξ (sárx, flesh) + κόλλα (kólla, glue, adhesive) from its traditional use sealing wounds. Compare meat glue and German Fleischleim.
