From Middle English forthgoing, deverbal of forthgon (to go forth, proceed), from Old English forþgān (to go forth, proceed), from Proto-Germanic *furþa (forward), *gāną (to go), equivalent to forth- +‎ going. Adjective from present participle of forthgo.
