Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Latin fūlīginem, accusative singular of fūlīgo, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂li-, from *dʰewh₂-. The expected Romanian result would have been *furigine, but was probably modified through assimilation or a hypercorrection to rhotacism.

Noun[edit]

funingine f (plural funingini)

  1. soot, lampblack, smut
    Synonyms: scrum, negreală
