From Middle High German gemeine, from Old High German gimeinī, a nominalization of the adjective gemeini, from Proto-West Germanic *gamainī, from Proto-Germanic *gamainiz (shared, communal, common) Cognate with archaic German Gemeine, Luxembourgish Gemeng, also Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌼𐌰𐌹𐌽𐌴𐌹 (gamainei).
