Etymology 1[edit]
From Old Swedish giælda, giælla, gælla, from Old Norse gjalda, from Proto-Germanic *geldaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeldʰ- (“to pay”). Under influence from Low German gelden, compare gälda. See also Icelandic gilda and Icelandic gildandi.
