Vietnamese[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

  • cấy (in North Central dialects less affected by lenition)

Etymology[edit]

North Central form with different path of diphthongization of mainstream gái.

As with nhôông (husband), originally just meant "man, male", gấy/cấy originally (and still) meant just "woman, female".
