Etymology[edit]

After the character Gargamel in the Smurfs media franchise.[1]

The character himself is originally named in French after Gargamelle, Gargantua's mother in François Rabelais' pentalogy, whose name he derived from Occitan gargamèla (throat). Compare Catalan gargamella and French gargamelle.
