From Middle Irish garrda,[2] from Old Norse garðr (enclosed space, yard),[3] from Proto-Germanic *gardaz (court, yard, enclosure), from *ǵʰortós (enclosure), from *ǵʰer- (to enclose). Doublet of gort.
