German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Gebrauch +‎ -lich

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ɡəˈbʁɔʏ̯çlɪç]
  • (file)

Adjective[edit]

gebräuchlich (strong nominative masculine singular gebräuchlicher, comparative gebräuchlicher, superlative am gebräuchlichsten)

  1. usual, customary, common, in use
    Synonyms: üblich, landläufig, (rare) usuell
    Antonym: ungebräuchlich

Usage notes[edit]

  • Not used for “usual” in the sense of “that which one is accustomed to” (German gewohnt). For example, one could say Wir nehmen unseren üblichen Tisch (We're taking our usual table), but the same sentence would not work with gebräuchlich.
