From Old Norse kirkja, from Old English circe, from Proto-West Germanic *kirikā, from Byzantine Greek κυριακόν (δόμα) (kuriakón (dóma), Lord's (house)), from Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios, Lord). Samic cognates include Northern Sami girku and Southern Sami gærhkoe.
