Inherited from Proto-Baltic *gīˀwetei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷíh₃weti. Compare Lithuanian gyvénti, dialectal gývoti, Old Prussian giwīt, but Latvian dzîvuôt, dialectal dzîvât.[1][2]
