Back-formation from glitzy, in turn from German glitzern (“glint”). Cognate with Old Norse glitra, glita (“glitter”) and Gothic 𐌲𐌻𐌹𐍄𐌼𐌿𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (glitmunjan, “glisten”).
