From Middle English goddoghter, goddoȝter, from Old English goddohtor (goddaughter), equivalent to god- +‎ daughter. Cognate with Danish guddatter (goddaughter), Swedish guddotter (goddaughter), Icelandic guðdóttir (goddaughter).
