From Proto-Iranian *gáwbati, from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (to call, cry) with a -b⁽ʰ⁾- enlargement, perhaps connected to the synonymous *ǵʰewH-. Cognate with Persian گفتن (goftan, speak).
