Probably reduced from Middle High German herberge, from Old High German heriberga, from Proto-West Germanic *harjabergu (“barracks; refuge, shelter”). Cognate with German Herberge, English harbor. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
