Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mon-Khmer *haap ~ *hup ~ *huup ~ *ʔuup (“to eat”); cognate with Mon ဟာပ် (hap, “to eat”), Shwe Palaung ဟာပ် (“to eat (curry)”), Koho hup (“to eat”), Khasi kahup (“to gulp, gobble”) and Khmer ហូប (houp, “to eat”).
