hack-iron (plural hack-irons)

  1. A miner's pickax or hack.
  2. A chisel or similar tool for cutting metal, as wire, into nails.
    • 1875, J. Walker, The handy book of object lessons, revised by H. Smith, page 98:
      He then takes one of the rods out of the fire, and resting it on the anvil, draws out the nail by a few skilful blows, and cuts it off from the rod by means of a hack-iron.
