Borrowed from Brunei Malay harimau, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qari-maquŋ. Possibly also from Tamil அரிமா (arimā, “lion”). Compare Kapampangan ulimo, Cebuano halimaw, and Maranao arimaw.
