Inherited from Middle French hamel, from Old French hamel (hamlet), diminutive of ham (small village), from Frankish *haim (village, home), from Proto-Germanic *haimaz (village, home), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóymos (village, home), from *tḱey-.
