Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish خطاء (hataen, by mistake), from Arabic خَطَأً (ḵaṭaʔan), adverbial accusative of خَطَأ (ḵaṭaʔ, mistake). By surface analysis, hata (mistake) +‎ -en. Compare Azerbaijani xətaən.
