French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Early spellings include housecol and houscot; the current spelling is due to folk etymology (see hausser, col). It has been suggested that the origin is Middle Dutch *halskote, given the French word's early attestation in Flanders, but the Dutch word is not attested.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]
