From Ottoman Turkish هلیك (helik), from a form of Ancient Greek χᾰ́λῐξ (khálix). Compare modern Greek χαλίκι (chalíki).

  2. (dialect) various small objects such as seeds, pebbles, and pieces of brick or stone
